Message as for 5spd and shifting, sounds like you're doing okay based on the outcome of that race. VR-4's are usually faster off the line since they can launch really good (AWD) but after that, the Z has a full advantage.

My suggestion on driving 5spd, just drive the car, get use to it, try different things, try launching at different RPM's and so on. Each car is little different and once you get to know your car, you'll know what to do, what not to do, best way to launch it and so on...

On the streets with my street tires, I usually launch at around 3,000 - 3,500 RPM's off the line (when I'm racing)
On the 1/4 mile track with my drag radial tires, I usually launch anywhere from 5,000 - 6500 RPM's depanding on how sticky the track and my tires are...
